Reflection

Some of the key things that i will remember in the future is all the stuff about the legislative branch and the executive branch. This was stuff i didn't know before this class and it is something that i can take on for the future. It will make me sound intelligent when i am in college and having a political discussion. The main skill that i have learned was how to use the internet to my advantage to learn all about the wonderful world of political science. there are so many great resources out there for me to use.

The New President of the United States

We had to talk about the impact of certain things on the election or the blog that we are following. I am ogn to talk about the impact of SNL and since i followed Obama's blog, talk about what he had to say a few days after the election.

On Obama’s Blog:
-Right at the top of the webpage there are some of the top newspaper that have front page headlines of Obama’s win for the Presidency.
-There is a personal letter from Barack Obama to the people before he made his speech at Grant Park. To me this shows the good character that he has and that it is not just someone who is writing the stuff for him, but it comes from himand shows his gratitude to the people of the United States.
-It is all about thanking the people for voting and making history. And for making change a possibility.

Impact of SNL on the election:
From reading an article about the effect of SNL on the election i took this quote that shows us that there definately is an impact of what we watch on how we vote. "We saw that 10 percent of voters said they were influenced by the skits. At the same time, the data shows that 59 percent of those who saw the skits voted for Obama and 39 percent voted for McCain." Mike Dabadie, FirstView researcher. I completely agree with the article. I know that I saw the SNL skits and I was greatly influenced by them. I know that many of the younger people voting saw the SNL skits, and to me that is one of the age groups that is most important to this election. Whether people were voting for Obama becuase Palin was made fun of or they were voting for McCain becuase Palin herself and John McCain both came on to show their funnier side, watching the SNL skits made a difference with the way people voted. If you happened to miss any of the SNL skits, here is my favorite one:

This Weeks Happenings on Obama's Blog

When you first jump on to the main page of the blog, the first thing you see are all the little blurbs about how well Obama did in the Presidential Debate last night. To listen to the full podcast of the debate, click here: http://2008central.net/2008/10/15/2008centralnet-presidential-election-podcast-101508/As you look at the side toolbar, you can click on all of the events that happened during that past week, and a screen will pop up and tell you all you wanted to know about that certain event. Below the rave reviews of Obama's debate, they have an entry about Obama's trip to Londonberry, New Hampshire where he talked about the issues and promoted himself.

As we keep scrolling, we can watch a video of Joe Biden's press tour, but also then read the articles that had mention Joe Biden and the campaign. Right in the middle we can see a new commercial that Obama's team wanted to air. The link to watch it on youtube is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv7TU_2-Igg. Towards the bottom of the page, there is an e-mail from Barack Obama, and then the last thing on the page is a video of Obama's closing argument in the debate. overall there was a lot of things that happened today alone, so there was no other room on the first page for information from the rest of the week. If you wanted to find out what happened earlier in the week, you can just click on the numbers at the bottom of the page.

Presidential Blog

The blog that I will be following for the rest of the semester is http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/hqblog

This is the blog for Barack Obama. When you first get to the home page, there are all the recent articles that wrote about Obama and what he has been doing. From there, there are many links at the top of the page where you can learn about the candidates and their families or read about the issues and Obama's stance on those certain issues. Also there are links where you can see what new ads are out on tv, read his speeches, or just learn about all the information pertaining to your home state and the Obama campaign. Going down the right hand side of the blog, there are links to other sources such as where you can donate money to the cause, register to vote, supporters of Hilary Clinton and what they can do to help get involved and other general links for getting Obama information.

This blog is different from the other blogs that i have looked at in many different ways. The other blogs that i looked at don't have as many outside links that they can go to. Also on Barack Obama's blog, there are many different pages that you can go to and look at. On the others they are pretty much the one blog on the one topic. Also, there are different types of media on the "professional" blog such as newspaper articles, movies, and commercial ads. Also, you really can't find the opinions of Obama, except on the issues page. The other blogs it is all one persons opinion.

The issue that i choose to look at was Obama's stance on education. On the issues page, he outlines the problems that he sees with the way that education is now, then he outlines in bullet form by groups like early childhood education, k-12, college, and the plan to recruit new teachers. At the top of the page, there is a spot that you can click on to send your own ideas on what you think should be in Obama's plan. Since i want to become a teacher, this is an issue that concerns me. I like that on the right hand side of the web page you can click on a link and read John McCain's stance on whatever issue you are looking up. I think that the manner that he presents his ideas and his beliefs, and the way that he is going to propose change if he is elected is very understandable and easy for teens or people who might not know that much about politics to follow and read.

The Blogs to Follow

I am all for the newest celebrity gossip, so of course the only blog to follow would be Perez Hilton's. He gives his commentary on all of the juiciest new scandals invading Tinseltown. I spend a ton of time laughing out loud reading story after story of Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears. Once you start reading it, it becomes almost like an addiction...you have to keep on reading until you get all the gossip you can get. Keeping up with the goings-on in Hollywood is a favorite past time of mine, and I am sure I am not the only one who thinks like this. The link for his blog is http://perezhilton.com/.

When I am not surfing on Perez Hilton for the latest gossip, I love to read about the best sports team...The Philadelphia Phillies. I am one of the biggest fans and almost never miss a game. The blog is dedicated to any fan who feels like sharing their opinions of games or players. I like reading about what other people think about the Phillies and to know that I am not the only crazy fan. If you are as big a fan as I am of the Phillies you should check out this blog. http://www.philliesnation.com/

Are We Really the Dumbest Generation?

To say that we are the dumbest generation, is making a bad accusation without getting all the facts first. Just because we live in a day and age that allows us access to technology, does not mean that we are dumb. In Mark Bauerlein's opinion, earlier generations retain the information and knowledge that they learn while our generation, Generation Y, just retain information long enough to recite it back for someone else. This could not be furthest from the truth.

With classrooms turning towards technology, there is more concentration on specific events that happened in history, or even just a more in depth look into something. Just because we don't know answers to questions that the Newsweek article, "The Dumbest Generation? Don’t Be Dumb." thinks we should know, does not mean that you can assume technology is to blame. For Mark Bauerlein to claim that we are easy "Jaywalking" targets is stereotyping a whole generation based off a few people. And this is where i have a very big concern. Yes, some people in Gerneration Y don't know who William Rehnquist is, but to then assume that the WHOLE generation is then dumb, is frankly, well, dumb. I am willing to bet that even though some people might not know who he is, they can jump on a computer and find then information, unlike people from other generations.

Generation Y has an advantage over all the older generations, technology. In todays worl, our generation can teach themselves what other generations had to learn in the classroom and expand further on an idea. Older generations might know an answer to a certain question, but our generation can find out so much more information thatn just a single answer. All with the help of technology. To say that IM and Facebook are helping to contribute to the title of the dumbest generation, and that it is the parents and teachers fault is ridiculous. Everyone, no matter what generation you are from, had things that they did all the time. Our generation has technology, so why not use it for something that makes us happy and keeps us from getting into trouble. I am sure that when other generations were kids, they did things that their parents didn't like, but did them anyways. So what is the harm of talking and keeping in touch with friends, which is really all the Facebook and IM is?

Generation Y is really the farthest thing from dumb. Technology has broght them away from being dumb, not the other way around. to have the ability to "go deeper" into a subject matter, or to even know how to use a computer, shows how we are not just dumb. How many people over 40 do you know that can create a wiki or create a CFH? Not that many. Mark Bauerlein made assumptions about a generation without knowing all the facts first and basing an opinion off of a handful of people. Maybe he should jump on a computer and try to accomplish the things that our generation has done, and then try to tell everyone that we are dumb. He can't do it.
